Kerala Sambar

A traditional South Indian lentil and vegetable stew, made with our authentic sambar powder.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Toor Dal (pigeon peas)
  • 1 cup mixed vegetables (drumstick, carrots, pumpkin)
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • A small piece of tamarind, soaked in water
  • 2 tbsp Sambar Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder
  • For Tempering: 1 tsp mustard seeds, 1 red chilli, a pinch of asafoetida, a few curry leaves
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Cook the toor dal with turmeric powder until soft. Mash it and set aside.
  2. In a separate pot, cook the mixed vegetables with onion and tomato until they are tender.
  3. Extract the juice from the soaked tamarind and add it to the vegetables.
  4. Add the Sambar Powder and salt. Let it boil for 5 minutes.
  5. Add the cooked, mashed dal to the pot. Mix well and let it simmer for 10 minutes.
  6. For tempering, heat oil in a small pan, add mustard seeds, red chilli, asafoetida, and curry leaves.
  7. Pour the tempering over the sambar. Serve hot.
