Kerala Sambar
A traditional South Indian lentil and vegetable stew, made with our authentic sambar powder.
Ingredients
- 1 cup Toor Dal (pigeon peas)
- 1 cup mixed vegetables (drumstick, carrots, pumpkin)
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 1 tomato, chopped
- A small piece of tamarind, soaked in water
- 2 tbsp Sambar Powder
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder
- For Tempering: 1 tsp mustard seeds, 1 red chilli, a pinch of asafoetida, a few curry leaves
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Cook the toor dal with turmeric powder until soft. Mash it and set aside.
- In a separate pot, cook the mixed vegetables with onion and tomato until they are tender.
- Extract the juice from the soaked tamarind and add it to the vegetables.
- Add the Sambar Powder and salt. Let it boil for 5 minutes.
- Add the cooked, mashed dal to the pot. Mix well and let it simmer for 10 minutes.
- For tempering, heat oil in a small pan, add mustard seeds, red chilli, asafoetida, and curry leaves.
- Pour the tempering over the sambar. Serve hot.
